The importance of white color in Wimbledon

We all know that in the tennis fraternity The Wimbledon is considered as one of the most important and prestigious tournaments of the four. The Wimbledon is so prestigious that it is awash in long lasting tradition, such as calling Men's and women's competition as "Gentlemen's" and "Ladies" respectively. It consists of the Royal box which has been reserved for the members of English nobility since 1922. But of all the things the most noticeable aspect of this tournament is the rule of all white dress code.

The reason behind this is for the very simple fact that it's the dress code.

It's the dress code because when this code was written back in 1880's sweat stains were considered improper and unsightly, hence it was decided that white should be worn to reduce their visibility, as sweat can be more evident in a vibrant clothing.

While it has been a rule for a while now, the all white is not popular between players.

The most noticeable example is of the tennis great Andre Agassi . This tennis great refused to play at Wimbledon from 1988 to 1990 because the tournament didn't allow him to wear the flashy apparel which inturn was his mojo and in which he was comfortable the most. Even Roger Federer who is widely considered as the greatest player of all time was reminded in 2013 to follow the all white dress code because his shoe sole was coloured in orange.

It's not just the players who have to follow the all white code, the tennis gear also has to get along. The headband, wristband, socks, shoes all have to adhere to rules of white.

Apart from the rule it also follows the all white theme for traditions sake as this is considered as the most prestigious tournament of the 4 majors. The rules are so strict that the referee has the right to force the players to change under the threat of disqualification.

The rules of all white may be annoying for the players, but at least the club has shown that it can change with the times if the conditions force them to.
